An esteemed and long-respected member of the Mirrer Yeshiva, Rav Matisyahu Katz, is reportedly tragically ill. He has reportedly had close relationships with all of the Mirrer roshei yeshiva throughout the years, and is regarded as one of the great talmidei chachamim of the community.
Rav Katz’s medical expenses cost him an overwhelming 30,000 shekels per month, a sum completely out of the budget of a modest kollel family. The family’s inability to keep up with the expense has now plunged them into a highly sensitive situation, a matter of life-and-death.
The status of helpers to their cause was hatzalas nefashos (life-saving) was explicitly confirmed this week, after an urgent message was issued by Rav Yitzchok Ezrachi of the Mir:
“I am seeking help, from the bottom of my soul, for my friend, the Tzaddik and Gaon Rav Matityahu Katz shlita, one of the great Talmidei Chachamim, a long-standing pillar of our Yeshiva,” his letter begins.
“Therefore, we are extending our plea to the members of the Chabura specifically, and all of Hashem’s nation in general, to heroically rise to the occasion and assist in every way possible those who are involved in saving this poor man from his state of poverty, which constitutes as truly life-saving.”

Whether or not the Jewish people will join Rav Ezrachi in “heroically rising up,” in order to save the Torah scholar, has yet to be revealed. In the meantime the Jerusalem Mir community, together with tzedaka organization Kupat Ha’Ir, are desperately rallying for this important cause.
The family asks that klal yisroel continue to pray for Matisyahu ben Rochel Gittel
