Standing Up For Hebron – The Hebron Fund

After a record breaking 35,000 people attended the annual Parshat Chayei Sarah Shabbat, Hebron is gearing up for a major fundraising campaign. This year has been eventful for Hebron’s Jewish community which marked the 50th anniversary of Hebron’s liberation in the Six Day War, the dramatic victory that led to the reunification of Jerusalem and the return to Judea and Samaria.

Not all recent news has been good however. UNESCO, the United Nations body, voted to declare Hebron’s old city including the Ma’arat HaMachpela to be a Palestinian world heritage site in Danger, the latest in a series of anti-Israel resolutions. This led to both the United States and Israel leaving the UN body, specifically mentioning our little city as one of the reasons. Also in February, the Palestinian Authority controlled portion of Hebron elected a former terrorist as their mayor. Released in prisoner exchange deal the new head of the city personally participating in the murder of 6 Jewish worshipers back in 1980. These unhappy incidents may have pushed the average Israeli to show their support for the Jewish community, with the outpouring of support on the high holidays, including over 30,000 people at the annual Succot concert and and other 35,000 at the recent Shabbat Chayei Sarah.

Riding on the excitement, the Hebron Fund is now embarking on a special 24-hour campaign to raise funds for the Jewish community of Hebron. This unique all-or- nothing campaign is based through the Charidy program in which all donation are quadrupled.

The Hebron Heroes campaign is raising money for such projects as outreach tours, hot meals for Hebron children, soldier care packages, camp scholarships, upkeep of hoy sites, and pubic events for visitors.
