Polls have closed in New York City’s primary election, and interviews with voters show Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is running ahead of ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer in the Democratic race for comptroller.
No official returns are yet available. Edison Media Research conducted exit polls for The Associated Press and other news organizations.
Spitzer and Stringer have been waging a bitter campaign for the city’s top financial office.
Spitzer is seeking a comeback five years after resigning as governor in disgrace. Stringer is striving to capture a nomination he once expected to snag easily.
The winner will face a Republican and other opponents Nov. 5.
Spitzer is also a former state attorney general. Stringer is a former state assemblyman.
