Following confirmation that doctors, nurses, healthcare workers and patients have been given notice of the imminent closure of Long Island College Hospital, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio held an emergency press conference and issued the following statement:

“This community has been lied to. At the same time SUNY and the Governor promised everything possible was being done to save L.I.C.H., they were preparing to sell it off to the highest bidder. SUNY is violating a court order to keep this hospital open, and we won’t let it stand. The same luxury condos being put up over St. Vincent’s will soon rise over L.I.C.H. if we don’t stop this in its tracks.

“This community needs its hospital. People’s health—not the profits of the real estate industry—needs to be our priority. We won’t let the greed that destroyed St. Vincent’s do the same to L.I.C.H. We are going to fight this illegal closure every way we can.”
