A NYPD K-9 is nursing his canines after being kicked twice in the mouth while assisting officers breaking up a subway brawl.
Police spokesman Paul Browne said Tuesday that Bear, a 6-year-old German shepherd, sustained two cracked canines, two chipped teeth and a cut tongue when a woman being handcuffed kicked him twice in the mouth. Officers were breaking up a fight between four women on a New York City subway platform.
Bear’s handler, Officer Vincent Tieniber (tehn-IH-bur), suffered a sprained wrist during the arrest. Despite his injury, Tieniber said Bear kept the woman’s foot in his mouth until she was handcuffed.
The 22-year-old was arrested and charged with injuring a police animal, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.
Bear was treated and is expected to return to full duty Wednesday.
