NYPD Detective Gets 7 Years In Shooting

chnA longtime New York City police detective convicted of attempted murder in an off-duty shooting has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Leopold McLean, of Queens, had been charged with wounding his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend in November of 2010. The unarmed victim was shot after he violated a restraining order by turning up at the woman’s home. The 48-year-old McLean was assigned to the team that does security sweeps for Mayor Michael Bloomberg and was a NYPD member for 19 years.

He was convicted last month and faced 25 years in prison.

The New York Post reports Friday that Judge James Griffin told McLean at his sentencing that he forgot his common sense when he opened fire.
