Labor union members will be on hand Monday as Gov. Chris Christie announces plans to spend $1.3 billion to raise the roadway of the Bayonne Bridge.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will boost the bridge’s roadway by 64 feet in order to accommodate larger cargo ships that will use the expanded Panama Canal by the end of 2015.
The raising of the 80-year-old span will be combined with an ongoing $2 billion harbor-deepening project.
The Bayonne Bridge connects Bayonne with Staten Island, N.Y., and traverses the Kill Van Kull waterway.
