One of New York City’s oldest movable bridges is undergoing repair due to damage from Superstorm Sandy.
The 19th century Carroll Street Bridge in Brooklyn connects Carroll Gardens with Park Slope.
It’s the city’s only wooden bridge that carries cars.
Sandy flooded the small one-way bridge’s steel beams, motors and electrical control console.
The New York Times says workers had to slide the bridge back manually last month. It has to be in a fixed open position during the overhaul, expected to last 4-5 months.
It’s most distinctive feature is the way it opens to lets boats through. It is retracted diagonally onto the shore.
A city-employed bridge operator needs two hours’ notice to open the bridge. But luckily the bridge isn’t opened often.
