On the first day back from a monthlong strike, two city school buses were involved in rush-hour accidents in Staten Island and Queens, officials said.
In Staten Island, a school bus had turned left from Van Duzer Street onto Waverly Place about 7 a.m. when a car tried to squeeze by, hit the bus and careened into a nearby telephone pole, FDNY and Department of Education officials said.
Five students aboard the bus, who attend Lavelle Preparatory Charter School, were taken to Staten Island University Hospital for observation, a DOE spokeswoman said.
Two other adults suffered minor injuries in the incident, according to the FDNY. It was not immediately clear if they were on the bus or in the vehicle that hit it. They were not taken to the hospital.
In Queens, a bus at the intersection of Sutphin Boulevard and 105th Avenue was rear-ended by a car about 7:18 a.m., causing the bus to swerve into a fire hydrant, officials said.
Two people were taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center with minor injuries, an FDNY spokesman said. Four others refused medical treatment at the scene. The ages of the injured passengers weren’t immediately known.
Parents of students in both crashes were notified, education officials said.
