MTA Looking Into Re-Opening South Ferry Station

The acting executive director says the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is looking into ways to get at least some service going at the South Ferry subway station in lower Manhattan.

Thomas Prendergast spoke to the City Council’s Transportation Committee on Tuesday.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Prendergast said limited train service could return in some months, far sooner than a full restoration of the station.

The station, at Manhattan’s southern tip, was inundated with water up to its ceiling during Superstorm Sandy. The MTA estimates that fully restoring the station would take up to three years and cost $600 million.

Prendergast also said the agency is looking into ways to protect the infrastructure from future floods.
