A crippling school bus strike has forced the city to shell out millions of dollars to transport kids to school — but the strike has actually saved taxpayers money, the Daily News has learned.
New numbers obtained by The News show that the city has saved up to $33 million by withholding payments to bus companies since drivers and special-education matrons walked off the job Jan. 16.
The drivers with Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1181 are protesting the city’s decision to put private bus company contracts out to bid without employee protections for senior workers.
Of the 152,000 kids who use yellow buses, approximately 100,000 are still without a ride to class. The city has spent big to help their parents get them to school and back.
