Utilities Discuss Sandy Challenges Before City Council

The City Council will try to get to the bottom of the power and communications issues that plagued the city during and after Hurricane Sandy. Officials from Consolidated Edison, the Long Island Power Authority, Verizon and NY1’s parent company Time Warner Cable will be among those to testify before the Council.

City Housing Authority officials defended the agency’s response at yesterday’s hearing.

NYCHA officials said they restored essential services as quickly as possible, but Council members said three weeks without power was far too long.

The agency was also criticized for not having generators and portable boilers available and for a lack of communication with residents.

Some 80,000 NYCHA residents lost services as a result of the storm.
