Port Authority Reopens After Gas Smell Forces Partial Evacuation

Delays are being reported into and out of Port Authority Bus Terminal after a strong natural gas odor forced the evacuation of the building’s south wing, authorities said.

The section of the terminal where the gas odor was detected was evacuated and buses were halted after the smell was reported at about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman said the south wing was declared safe and reopened less than an hour later.

Chopper 4 captured images of a significant emergency presence near the scene between 40th and 41st streets.

Buses were dropping passengers off at 10th Avenue instead of inside the terminal. Commuters were advised to expected delays.
