Nearly 90 Rockland County residents were forced to evacuate their homes overnight after a tractor-trailer hauling hazardous chemicals caught fire on I-87.

Police say the truck carrying liquid zinc had a brake fire around 2 a.m. today on the Thruway in Suffern. The southbound lanes between exits 15 and 14 had to be closed.

Officials say the flames were quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported. The tanker remained intact and no hazardous material caught fire or was released.

The Suffern Community Center was opened to house some of the people from the surrounding area that had to be evacuated. The last group of people were allowed home around 8 a.m. today.
