It’s happened to all of us at one point or another. You meet a seemingly ordinary person and walk away inspired!
That is precisely what happened when my doorbell rang earlier this afternoon. We were expecting a delivery, and when the driver entered our home, I was immediately struck by his pleasant demeanor. Noticing we have a baby swing, he inquired about our children and we began speaking about the beauty of raising a family. He mentioned how he has hopes of raising a very large family one day because he values life and hopes he can give back as much as he could.
We shook hands, I thanked him for his service, and we were about to part ways when I said “Oh my name is Abe, was a real pleasure to meet you, I didn’t catch your name.”
“My name is Edelstein”.
That’s a beautiful name I replied, what’s your first name? “Edelstein is my first name”. Intrigued, I asked who he was named after.
“After the Dr that saved my life”. “You see, I was born a stillborn and all the Dr’s gave up hope, except for one Dr, his name was Dr Edelstein and he refused to give up. He worked on me until he found a pulse!!! As soon my parents realized I was going to survive, they instantly decided to name me Edelstein”.
With chills running down my spine I said Edelstein is a Jewish name. “It sure is” he replied, “he was a man of your faith, and I have the utmost respect for the Jewish people.”
What an amazing story about humanity!! We often forget the impact a single person has the power to make! As a society, we tend to glorify people that achieve large and very public accomplishments; people who donate millions of dollars to charity, celebrities etc.
And that is why I was so moved by this chance encounter with this friendly delivery man who undoubtedly taught me a life lesson.
Here we have the story of a simple Dr who was not in any spotlight yet chose to go the extra mile to do the best he possibly can for this newborn baby. So much so, that this man’s parents wanted to name their son in his honor!
Every one of us has the power to be amazing. Go out there, do something great, and together we can truly make the world a better place!
