Volover Rov Issues Kashrus Statement Regarding Sardines Infested With Anisakis Worms

The Volover Rov has released the following Kashrus alert in regards to the recent controversy with worms found in sardines. This story was first brought to light in an article published by YWN on February 9th.

The following is the English portion of the latest statement from the Volover Rov:

URGENT NOTICE

Due to the many inquires regarding insect infestation in the stomach (not in the flesh) of the various “gefen” fish its important to again advise the following:

A. Sardines from “Portugal”, weather in oil or water, must first be opened and the inside cleaned out thoroughly. If one is not sure how to clean it, do not eat them.

B. The “skinless & boneless” sardines are OK.

C. The “bristling” sardines from Scotland, whether in water or oil, cannot be cleaned and may not be eaten.

D. The kippered snacks from Canada are OK.

E. All tuna is OK.

  1. He is discussing his own hashgacha. I dont think his hechsher is on other brands of sardines.

Does anyone know WHO Rabbi Tzvi Goldberg of the Vaad Hakashrus of Flatbush is? Has anyone ever heard of the Vaad Hakashrus of Flatbush, for that matter? Is there a relationship between Rabbi Golberg of the Vaad Hakashrus of Flatbush and Rabbi Meir Goldberg of the Vaad Harabonim of Flatbush? Is there a relationship between the Vaad Hakashrus of Flatbush and the Vaad Harabonim of Flatbush?

  2. Naar,
Because the Volover Ruv Shlita gives hashgocha to that brand.

This story broke WAY before the time mentioned when the Volover Ruv Shlita published an alert all by himself in early January. He didn’t need the Vaad of Flatbush.

  3. ITS NOT JUST GEFEN AND THIS ALERT IS TOTTALLY DIFFERENT THEN THE VOLOVERS FIRST ALERT HE IS NOW SAYING THAT SCOTLAND IS ALSO INFESTED!! sorry about caps but thats how i felt.

  4. Note that the actual letter does not contain the two typos contained in the article (“weather” instead of “whether” and “inquires” instead of “inquiries”).

  5. apashutayid- to answer your question the vaad hakashrus of flatbush is a department of the vaad harabonim or flatbush. R Meir Goldberg has been running the vaad hakashrus for many years now. R Tzvi is his son who also works for the vaad hakashrus.

  6. the vads alert was put out difrnt then the vuluva much diffrent. they said scotland after theyy said scotland the vuluva changed his notice to scotland

  7. THAT STATEMENT IS VERY LOGICAL. ARE THEY RECALLING THE PRODUCT TO PUT A LABEL ON EACH CAN SAYING ONE HAS TO CHECK FOR WORMS? IF THE RAV’S NAME IS ON THE CAN – AS WELL AS THE OU SYMBOL – IT MEANS ONE DOESN’T HAVE TO CHECK.
NOW WE SEE WHAT THESE TWO HASHGACHOS ARE WORTH

  8. Question: Is this insect infestation a new phenomena? If not, how come it is treated as a new issue, shouldn’t it have been discussed/paskened upon a couple hundred years ago? Is it a genuine halachic concern or a latest chumra trend?

  9. I agree with Bestbubby…. If this goes on, we won’t be permitted to breathe soon. I don’t like sardines and forget about anchovies, feh.
