In an effort to encourage Frum Jews to serve in the IDF, the army has recently enlisted Frum youths who received exemptions from the military for psychiatric reasons. According to Haaretz, the IDF has reportedly allowed five individuals, who had regretted feigning mental problems in order to dodge military service, to join Nachal Chareidi.
According to the IDF’s new directive, enlistment of such candidates for military service will require renewed professional approvals by private sector and army psychiatrists ensuring their mental stability.
Most Charedi youths who study at yeshivas receive army exemptions, but those not enrolled at yeshiva’s often claim that they have mental problems.

Great headline!!!!! Reminds me of the war days- “Uncle Sam wants YOU!”
probably wont put my comment in…
Editors Note: Actually, we will never approve any of your comments from now on. Congratulations on joining the ranks.
Your headline is not only misleading, but also incorrect. They don’t want anyone with genuine mental issues. They want those who faked it originally, and they will have to be approved by “by private sector and army psychiatrists”.
many enrolled in yeshivos also seek exemptions so that they do not have to be bothered every few months re-registering.
Now with the tal law going into effect many more will seek exemptions as the tal law makes them work at slave wages
Even those who have hashkafic issues with Medinat Yisrael, tend to be makir tov and show respect for the IDF. Is your need to be funny at the expense of the IDF (and those who would feign mental illness) so overwhelming? I find this to be a rather sad comment on the state of affairs within the charedi community and I hope the word “often” in your last sentence is an exaggeration.
DrYidd: “Even those who have hashkafic issues with Medinat Yisrael, tend to be makir tov and show respect for the IDF. ”
I do not think you are right at all IDF are looked at as ‘yiherog v’al ya’vor’& THE simbole of koci v’otzem yodi, by the anti zionim .
Haaretz’s article’s title was misleading…
Now that I wanted to comment on it, I see that the article appears to have been pulled from their site.
I wonder why…
Moderators Comment: Still there http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/877804.html
Israel reader – Haaretz article is pretty even handed, certainly given their political perspective.
nk – I said “tend to be makir tov,” specifically excluding extremist views. using the moderators of YW as refelective of what is tolerated, I am saddened to see that your view of “yiherog v’al ya’vor” is considered a vslid position.
As I previously said, Haaretz’s article’s title was misleading…
It reads:
“IDF enlists exempt Haredi youth who feigned mental illness”
This seems to imply that the IDF has “caught” some “fakers”, and has forcibly enlisted them.(typical Haredi bashing. – wink, wink…How many Haredi “fakers” do you know? Aren’t they all a bunch of fakers?)
In reality, the alleged “fakers” have come forward and regretted their actions, and have asked to be allowed to serve.
The title should therefore read:
“IDF allows enlistment of Haredi youth who feigned mental illness”
I am makir tov to IDF. But anyone who joins the army is mentally ill in my opinion. I would never put my life or my son’s life in the hands of secular politicians who go to war simply for political gain and who are ready to spill jewish blood at a drop of a hat for any type of gain. If gedolei yisroel were in charge, things would/will be much different…..
I agree with stam a deya. Why make yourself cannon fodder for the secular politicians? Even the secular citizens are asking themselves this question. Look, the prime minister doesn’t even attend a ceremony for the fallen soldier’s from last summer. Not to mention the body parts scandal with the dead soldiers at the army forensic unit. Or all the navy commandos who have cancer from training in the Litani (polluted) river. Etc. etc. etc.
stam a deya, well said. The zionists broght the terror that we are facing.
And they fight wars (i.e. the recent Lebanon incursion) that serve no purpose, but to spill Jewish blood in vain. (i.e. What has Lebanon II accomplished? It was ostensibly to save the 3 captured soldiers or to “send a message.” Meanwhile not only are the 3 soldiers still captive, they lost 150 Jewish lives in the process.)
And the corruption that it instills. Complete pritzus, etc. So to enlist in such a corrupt force, is insane indeed. And assur.

Feel free to share your opinions with all of us, but really, don’t pasken unless you’re qualified to do so.
Blue Pinky, not my psak, but rather of Gedolim far greater than I.

Great. So quote them as the poskim. It looked to me like it was your opinion.
Glad that there is now a Nachal Charedei so that those who want to join, under Rav Steinmans shlita’s haskama can.
With the Tal law being enforced, the wages of 2100shekel can be received for part time work, far from slave wages, but then again most post kollel guys only want CEO positions. (myself included).
sayit: Rav Steinman at best allows someone to join nachal chareidi as a bedieved, if someone is going to join anyway. Rav Steinman always preferred Yidden not join in the first place.
zionist, I didn’t ask him, but was there when answered the questioner. (I would avoid your second-hand information. But you haven’t even indicated what it is!)
But those bochurm ASKED Rav Shteinman. That’s the point! if you ask, he might tell you to join. But does he give talks to bochurim urging them to join? Or is it only for those bochurim vos halten derbei?
They may have asked. But we don’t have any idea if they asked, what they asked, and what the answer was.
He may have been shocked to even hear such a question. And he may have ruled bshim oifen nisht.
All we are left with here are maybes.
