Russian – Israeli billionaire Arkady Gaydamak has purchased 51% of a supermarket store chain in Israel called Tiv Taam for $100 Million. But more interestingly then the actual purchase is his plans for the stores. His immediate plans are to stop selling any non-Kosher meats and forbid any of the stores to be open on Shabbos.
In an interview with Yediot Achronot newspaper he stated “In my view, as a Jew and as a public figure in Jewish society, the promotion, distribution and sale of pork products in Israel offends the Jewish tradition. Therefore, my first order of business will be to ban the distribution and sale of pork products.”
Tiv Taam currently has 23 stores, and was originally opened in 1990 to specifically sell pork and other imported non-Kosher products.

a big chiddysh if hes not eh?
Great news, kol hakovod! May he go from strength to strength and be successful at all such endeavors.
It sounds like he’s not yet frum. Give him time.
Why is every action done by a Jew determined by, is he frum? will he be frum? will he be frum soon? Baruch Hashem, ma tov chelkanu. Grow up, and view the world and its people from a different perspective.
Wow! Who is this guy & what woodwork did he pop out of?!? He should live a long life and have Bonim Talmeday Chachomim!
sammygol
Might be a very good reason for that, Jewish tradition being almost non-existant may give people more a geshmach than religious coercion (politics etc). Same reason why many Israelis that we dealt with out-of-town, started observing mitzvohs & Torah learning, while in Israel they avoid it like the plague.
Never seen or heard of tiv taam
Not to take away form being a kiddush hashem, this guy wants to run for mayor of yerushalayim, and has said he will work very hard to get the frum vote. It is political, but maybe m’toch sh’lo lishma bo lishma…
Sayitlikeitis,
“Why is every action done by a Jew determined by, is he frum? will he be frum? will he be frum soon? Baruch Hashem, ma tov chelkanu. Grow up, and view the world and its people from a different perspective.”
We view the world from this point of view because only frum people know the truth of life and have the correct values.
We wouldn’t want to view the world from a twisted and limited non frum perspective. Why lower our standards?
this is a true kiddush hashem
frum or not, politically motivated or not – it is still the right thing to do.
mrmercy,
My thoughts exactly.
and in a previous post, yw bloggers were very critical about how mr gaydamak was offering to house sederot evacuees in yerushalayim. also a political statement.
dont forget, many chilonim (esp those russians that really are jewish) are opposed to chazir and chillul shabat be pharhesia, etc. even though they may not be shomer shabat, etc. and they are also opposed to reform and conservatives, etc (though they may be “open minded” whatever that means) ditto the shame parade and shame people (unluess they or their damily aRE
)(
even if its a political move at least he has “good” political moves and not “bad” ones that hurt yiddishkeit.it shows where his heart is.
