At a meeting in the home of Chacham Ovadia Yosef, it was declared that the 12 Shas MK’s were to place their support behind Shimon Peres – for president of Israel. The Jerusalem Post reported that Chacham Ovadia stated that his decision was made “out of appreciation of [Peres’] years of service on the behalf of Judaism.”

Shas party 1. does not want to deal with a scorned MK, which Peres will be if he loses for the 4th time 2. Peres at his age probably has a diminished yetzer hara – and therefore more trustworthy. Shas party will once again make the deciding vote, and regret it afterwards and ask mechila (Chacham Yosef asked mechila from the people of Emanuel for supporting Oslo).
