RCA Geirus agreement delayed

rca logo.jpgAccording to the JTA, the RCA has delayed their agreement with Israel’s Chief Rabbinate that would have settled the dispute over Geirus performed in the USA. [Agreement was reported HERE on YW.]

The agreement involves the automatic recognition in Eretz Yisroel of Geirus performed by any one of the participating batei din which will be part of the soon to-be-established network of Regional Batei Din for Geirus. All participating batei din will follow standardized procedures at every step of the Geirus.

Apparently, there was a misunderstanding over who would appoint the Daayanim to preside over the Batei Din that will consider candidates to become Geirum. They expect the matter to be cleared up soon.

  1. For the record, chareidei batei dinim do not participate in this agreement, as they do not care whether the “Chief Rabbinate” accepts them or not.

  2. Standardized procedures will be most helpful in the field of geirus, in many cases each batei din sets their own rules.

  3. This is a serious matter, because having a standard that is widely recognised is important for later generations. Our big concern in geirus is not whether the women who are megayer wear short sleeves or long sleeves, and whether the men wear hats and jackets for mincha. The big concern is that no orthodox rabbis ever do a geirus with less than 100% kabolas mitzvos. If the RCA and the rabbanut both pressure all their members to adhere to proper standards that would bring order to the current jungle.

  4. maitiv,

if “the women who are megayer wear short sleeves” as you put it, then by definition they are “less than 100% kabolas mitzvos.”

  5. “whether the women who are megayer wear short sleeves or long sleeves”

Did you mean because they haven’t yet learned all the guidelines of modesty, but their commitment ensures that they will increasingly uphold tznius along their journey of learning, or did you mean that tznius is irrelevant to Kabolas Hamitzvos?

    Please clarify.
