100,000 Compensatory Payment for Violating Worker’s Rights

The Tel Aviv Labor Court has ruled in favor of 26-year-old Yaakov Zueli, who was employed in the Dizengoff Club (Holmes Place) Energy Club in 2007. He was compelled to stand at a counter which was stocked with one phone and a computer. During his three months of employment, he was told that he must stand and cannot sit under any circumstances, a violation of the law.

At one point he took sick days, explaining the fact that he felt too weak to stand and entire day. He asked to sit for a bit but told the court his supervisor told him “take a pill and deal with it. No sitting”.

President of the Labor Court Justice Aliyah Fogel accepted the plaintiff’s case since his job description did not require him to stand or move around. While the law permits a fine of NIS 200,000 the court only awarded NIS 100,000, hoping the amount will be sufficient to serve as a deterrent.
