“If Gaza leaders would stop the terrorism and firing rockets, along with efforts to abduct Israelis and release Gilad Shalit, there wouldn’t be any reason for a Gaza embargo” stated President Shimon Peres in his opening address to the Jewish Agency General Assembly in Jerusalem.
The president added that if Gaza would turn to true peace, there would be no needs for flotillas. The president referred to Israel’s difficult position in the international community, citing ongoing efforts to delegitimize Israel. He insists that support for such actions is tantamount to supporting terror organizations such as al-Qaeda, Hamas, Hizbullah and for dictatorial regimes that arrest citizens without justification and without concern for human rights.

Israel should have made Shalit’s release the condition of letting in the flotillas in the first place. There is still time to do so. Israel could threaten to resume an blockade unless Shalit is released in good health. Of course, there is always the risk that chas veshalom Hamas – yemach shemam could kill him so Israel no longer has a bargaining chip.
