Yerushalayim Leads in Car Thefts


While Tel Aviv leads the nation in the number of vehicular accidents, Jerusalem is the capital of car thefts, Israel Police reports.

Israel Police on Tuesday, June 15th, released statistics pertaining to fatal vehicular accidents in Israel, reporting in 2009, there were 1,854 fatal accidents. This represents a 13% drop as compared to 2008.

Police add that there were 148 fatal accidents in Tel Aviv in 2009, an increase from the 134 in 2008. In Jerusalem there was a decline of 6% in 2009 compared to 2008. Haifa also boasted a decline (31%), as did Ashdod (21%), Petach Tikvah (29%), Beersheva (20%), Cholon (23%), Ramat Gan (32%), and Bnei Brak (5%).

Last Thursday was a deadly day on Israel’s roadways, with 16.4% of the accidents occurring on that day involving fatalities. 70% of vehicular accidents occur between the hours of 7:00am-7:00pm.

And now on to car thefts, with police reporting in 2009, 3,070 vehicles were stolen from the capital, leading the nation. This however represents a 8% decline in car thefts from the capital as compared to 2008. Tel Aviv takes second place with 2,210 car theft in 2009, a 24% decline from 2008. Rishon L’Tzion is in third place with 942 cars stolen.
