The Office of the IDF Spokesman confirms reports that soldiers and officers in Shayetet 13, the elite naval commando unit, have been instructed to close their Facebook pages if they have one, as well as prohibiting them from carrying cellular telephones that have built-in cameras. The reason given is field security, to prevent security leaks involving the elite unit.

The IDF has been addressing concerns regarding security leaks due to Facebook, in many or most cases not malicious, but careless posting of statements and photos that provide Israel’s enemies with information pertaining to elite units, soldiers and military bases.
