Hamas leaders in Gaza announce they will welcome the deployment of European Union observers at the Gaza Rafiach Crossing to Egypt. They are supporting an EU call to open the crossing to end the Israeli-imposed embargo, relying on the EU inspectors to ensure armaments are not brought via the crossing.
Senior Hamas officials based in Gaza welcomed a statement released earlier this week by Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos, whose country holds the EU’s rotating leadership slot. Speaking to the French AFP agency over the weekend, Moratinos explained the EU will be making a proposal in the coming days so incidents such as the Gaza flotilla never happen again in the future.
