Senator John Kerry, US President Barak Obama’s envoy to Syria and chair of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee arrived in Damascus on Saturday, where he met with President Bashar al-Assad.
As Assad was pleased with the White House’s new attitude, signaling a warming of relations, the announcement renewing sanctions against Damascus may have taken Damascus by surprise following Israel’s proof that Assad continues to supply Hizbullah with weaponry, in this case, Scud missiles.
Despite adamant Syrian denial, it appears Defense Minister Ehud Barak in his recent visit to Washington presented the undisputable evidence, winning over American support for the alleged Syrian violations, which are denied to this very day by Damascus and Arab nations.
The White House’s desire to send an ambassador to Damascus is cause for concern for Israel, as President Barak continues to exhibit a true desire to establish ties with Israel’s enemies despite the fact there is no progress in peace-making efforts with these leaders.
