IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Major-General Benny Gantz states that since the IDF’s unilateral withdrawal from the security zone in southern Lebanon in May 2000, Hizbullah has significantly fortified itself and improved its fighting capabilities. The deputy chief made his comments on Channel 1 TV, addressing the recent verbal assaults against Israel from Damascus.
He added that despite the recent exchange of harsh statements, he believes the quiet should be enjoyed but cautiously, monitoring the situation while maintaining the proper level of preparedness.
He made his remarks during an interview with Ayala Hasson, marking ten years since the retreat, adding there is no good way to withdraw in such a situation, responding to the criticism over how it was carried out at the time.
