The lifting of a gag order permits reporting that Turkish national Azat Shahin was arrested by security officials last month on suspicion of operating in areas of Yehuda and Shomron on behalf of the IHH. He is alleged to have been working with ‘pro-Palestinian’ elements and organizations in PA (Palestinian Authority) areas that have been outlawed.
The suspect was taken into custody on April 27th as he made his way from PA-occupied Beit Lechem to Yerushalayim. He has been in ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) custody since he is suspected of compromising state security.
After presenting evidence gathered by Shin Bet investigators, an Afula military court extended his remand for eight days, until Thursday.
The IHH is working actively to organize boats intended on breaking the naval blockade against Hamas-controlled Gaza.
In a media interview a number of days ago, the suspect’s wife insists that he studies in a university and is not involved in any illegal activity.
