Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad released a statement over the weekend that Israel is not genuinely interested in peace, explaining officials are aware that true peace will compel Israel to return land to Arab nations.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Turkish President Abdullah Gul in Ankara, Assad thanked Turkey for its role as mediator during the indirect talks between Jerusalem and Damascus during the previous Olmert administration. He stated that despite Turkey’s efforts, Israel is yet unprepared for such a move despite genuine Syrian willingness.
