Meron Lodging Going for Premium Rate This Lag B’Omer

The prices are being published ahead of Lag B’Omer, and more importantly, this coming shabbos, permitting one to present oneself at the lighting ceremony marking the start of the Lag B’Omer festivities.

A storage facility (machsan) apartment is going for NIS 700 for the one night (Friday), but that does not come close to comparing to luxury private home in the area, going for a staggering NIS 20,000 – 40,000 for shabbos, one night. A very simple machsan with four beds for two nights, including motzei shabbos, is going for NIS 1,700.

According to predictions, over 500,000 mispallalim will make their way to Kever Rashbi during Lag B’Omer, but only a relatively small few will be present on motzei shabbos when the fires are lit.

It appears that since Lag B’Omer falls on motzei shabbos this year, the market for lodging has skyrocketed with locals well-aware those wishing to take part in the motzei shabbos events must be in the area for shabbos.

  1. How much did Rashbi pay for 10+ years of lodging in the cave?

I somehow doubt he would have approved of these extravagant prices (probably not of the spectacle either).

  2. I disagree. Think about all those people who rent out their apartments for pesach. They are also entitled to make money. You don’t HAVE to go to meron for lag baomer. It is a luxury and for some a “cool” thing to do. It is to be expected to pay for that luxury. Make a bonfire near your house if you don’t have the means to pay for the luxury. Kol hacavod to those who want to make some money.

  3. To me it seems like another extravagance that we have imparted on ourselves. We should be concentrating on how to help our fellow man and less on how to waste the wealth that Hashem has seen fit to bestow upon us. We need to remember that at the end of the day did we use the money for the best possible cause?

  4. The truth is that being in Meron for Lag Baomer is an experience i would recommend but only if the ehrlichkeit is there all the way.
If it is a fad thing or just going to hang out do stay home.
And if you owe people money stay home and pay back some of your debts.
We had to go to the airport one erev Lag Baomer and it was an eye opener of not who we saw going, gezunterheit, we fargin with our whole heart but who was flying business and first class “oif yenims cheshbon, on the account of others”.
Many people in Eretz Yisroel choose to go to kever of Shimon Hatzadik on Lag Baomer.

  5. You gotta be stupid to believe that anyone is paying 20,000-40,000nis ($5,000-$10,000!!!!!!!!!!!)just for shabbos

  6. To #4, regarding people flying business or first class, you really must give the benefit of the doubt because it is so easy to get upgraded for free whether it is using your mileage or points from some other rewards program from credit cards etc. I personally know people who use their points or mileage to upgrade their airline seat to something more comfortable – business or first class and it doesn’t cost a cent.
