Next Week, Israel Observes Memorial & Independence Days

Next week, Israelis will observe both Memorial Day and Independence Day, beginning at 8:00pm on Sunday night, when a memorial ceremony will get underway at the Kosel for the members of security forces who died in the line of duty as well as victims of Arab terrorism.

On Sunday evening, in Petach Tikvah’s Chen HaTzafon neighborhood, an event will take place in the main shul attended by Rishon L’Tzion HaRav Shlomo Amar Shlita, as well as IDF Chief Rabbi Brigadier-General Avichai Ronsky. Rabbi Yehonatan Aduar arranged for the night of learning on behalf of the fallen.

At 11:00am on Monday morning, a two-minute siren will be heard around the country, after which memorial services begin in the nation’s military cemeteries.

Since 2000, 968 citizens were killed in terror attacks and 17,000 injured Bituach Leumi (National Insurance Institute) officials report. Since last Independence Day until Thursday, April 15, 2010, 5 citizens were killed and 71 injured.

The number of citizens killed since the establishment of the state in terror attacks until today stands at 2,431, including 118 foreign nationals and tourists. In 2009, Bituach Leumi paid NIS 400 million to victims of terror attacks and their families.

At 1:00pm, the official state memorial ceremony for victims of Arab terror will take place in the Har Herzl Military Cemetery in Yerushalayim.

Memorial Day comes to an end with sunset, and Independence Day 62 begins at 8:00pm. The day is an official state holiday, and all government offices and businesses are closed, newspapers are not printed, and buses run on a holiday schedule.

  1. If some posters can write that a woman may have choked to death because of something Rabbi Weiss did, it would not surprise me one bit to read comments here saying that the chayalim who died in defense of the “Zionist State” deserved to die as well…..

  2. I was counting the minutes until somebody could connect Obama to this article. True, I didn’t expect someone to call him an “Arab Terrorist,” but sometimes I underestimate the ability people have to say extreme and absurd and offensive things. Hitler, Arab Terrorist, etc. It just diminishes the impact of actual terrorists and Nazis, and insults our brethren who have died.

That said, I have yet to see articles that don’t somehow connect to Obama-hating. “Mrs. Rivka Bakingberg of Monsey won the big Geffen Kugel Contest with her delicious zucchini-potato kugel!”

“Kugels will be a thing of the past when that horrible Obama has his way. His evil henchmen are working right now to stamp out all kugel-baking just as Hitler did. Anybody who voted for this monster doesn’t deserve Mrs. Bakingberg’s fine kugel recipe.”
