35 MKs have signed a letter calling on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to prevent the razing of homes in the Givat HaYovel neighborhood of Yishuv Eli. The homes are officially regarded as an “illegal outpost” despite the fact they were built and funded by government agencies.
The lawmakers explain the prime minister has the authority to retroactively legalize the homes belonging to the widows of Major Ro’i Klein and Major Eliraz Peretz. The High Court of Justice, in response to a Peace Now petition, ordered the government to execute the demolition orders.
Absurdly, the MKs call on the prime minister to spare the two homes, seemingly willing to accept the destruction of the remainder the homes in the neighborhood. Mrs. Shlomit Peretz told the media in recent weeks that she does not want special care because her husband fell defending the country, explaining she and her children have a right to live in their home because that is the right of the Jewish People, not because her husband died in the line of duty.
About one-half of the chareidi MKs signed the letter, including Deputy Minister Meir Porush. Missing from the letter among Yahadut HaTorah officials are Deputy Minister Yaakov Litzman and Moshe Gafne and Uri Maklev.
Other chareidi MKs who signed include Moses, Michaeli, Azouli, Amsellem, Vaknin, Nissim Ze’ev and Amnon Cohen.
Shas ministers did not sign despite appearing to oppose destroying the homes.
