IDF Sgt. Elor Azariya Files An Appeal

idfIDF Sgt. Elor Azariya, who was recently sentenced to 18 months imprisonment on his manslaughter conviction, has filed an appeal. The young soldier was found guilty of manslaughter for shooting and killing a wounded incapacitated Arab terrorist in Hebron on Purim Day 2016.

A week after the announcement of the sentence, attorney Yoram Sheftal filed the appeal on behalf of his client on Wednesday, 3 Adar. Three of his attorneys announced they are resigning from his case immediately following the filing of the appeal.

The appeal was filed in the IDF Court in Tel Aviv. He is scheduled to begin serving his sentence on Sunday, 8 Adar 5777. It remains unclear if he will be permitted to remain under lockup on his base as was the case during the 10-months of the trial or if he will report to military prison on Sunday as scheduled.

The resigning attorneys released the following message. “While we believe the verdict is incorrect based on the evidence, we thought we have attained the maximum from the court and now what remains is to contact different channels towards assisting Elor. We have offered the family and Elor to do this without any fee whatsoever to avoid any and all economic dependency”.

However, the outgoing defense team said “The family and Elor feel the right move is to appeal. We shall discuss this with them along with whatever they need later on”. Sheftal is the new member on the legal team, having joined two months ago. He remains and is moving ahead with the appeal.

  1. The terrorist’s body was left for dead, left to die, shunned in case it would cause an explosion, so
you can’t kill a dead body so if you want the body not to continue dying you rush it to a hospital so no attempt to revive the body was made so who is guilty? those who failed to revive the body or those who endangered the lives of IDF soldiers by failing to protect them from an imminent explosion
    or
the brave soldier who assured that no expulsion would occur?
