A veteran Egged bus driver in Haifa performed a security check of the bus at the end of his route as required. He found a bag that was left by a passenger on a number 18 bus in the N’vei Sha’anan neighborhood containing money and documents worth $20,000.
The driver, Ataf Tatur, has been employed by Egged for forty years. After turning in the bag, they learned it belongs to a Russian-speaking couple. The driver recalled another Russian-speaker assisted them at the bus stop and through him, they were able to contact the couple which forgot the bag.
The couple came within an hour and provided ‘simanim’ for the bag, which was then turned over to them.
Egged officials add that there have been a number of cases in which drivers found large sums of money and they always did the correct thing, turning it over to track down the rightful owners.

Last week on a bus to Har Nof a passenger asked the driver how to go to Har Hamenuchos. The driver said to get off and start walking… The passenger looked surprised and and said that its a long long walk. The driver (not frum) responded “just start walking, I”m almost finished the route and I”ll come pick you up with my car, i want to do a Mitzvah on the way home.”!!!
Is it just me or does Israel have an oddly high frequency of large sums of money being left on buses and in bus stops? If i find a $20 in my pants pocket i consider it a glorious day… rolling on eged with 20k, huh?
The guy who lost the money was very grateful. The Israeli tax authorities were very grateful as well.
No, 2929, not a large number of travelers with large sums of money. Rather, a large number of people who travel by bus and don’t own cars.
