Giving New Life to Expired Food Products in Eretz Yisrael

If you have recently purchased kosher for Pesach pasta, Mentos candies, or a carbonated beverage in the Sharon area of the country, it might be wise to check the date of expiration of the product.

A raid in Moshav Burgta in the Sharon area revealed an operation in which the dates of expiration on food products are amended to permit redistribution into the marketplace.

The investigation was dubbed “Fresh Pesach”, involving investigators operating during recent weeks in the Sharon region, led to the discovery of two storage facilities in the moshav containing goods with new dates of expiration, ready for delivery to stores. We are dealing with items with expiration dates as far back as two years ago, and the new dates permits at least another year from now, permitting their sale in area stores. Included in the storehouses were Mentos candies, D’Oro pasta products, and a number of brands of carbonated drinks.

Officials add that in addition to the expired dates, the products were being stored in unacceptable conditions, reporting there were many cats in the storage facilities as well as many being in proximity to cleaning solvents. Police report the storage facilities are registered to 35-year-old R.N., who has a record of such criminal activities. He was arrested by Netanya district police and he was remanded by a Kfar Saba court on Monday.

Police officials warn the public that items with two expiration dates, or perhaps a sticker with an expiration date that may be covering another date, should not be purchased.
