Report: R’ Kanievsky Tells Rav to Cut Shiva Short

The following is a translation from an article in the BaKehilla newspaper: As students in talmidei torah around Eretz Yisrael begin testing for entry to yeshiva ketana, HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita this week have a unique p’sak halacha to a rebbe who was sitting shiva for his brother.

According to a BaKehilla report, R’ Kanievsky made a shiva visit to Rav Yosef Granet, an 8th grade rebbe. R’ Granet explained to the Rav that his older brother was niftar, and his absence from the talmid torah for a week will certainly impact his talmidim and their preparations for entry exams to yeshiva ketana. They are scheduled to be tested on rosh chodesh Nissan he explained. Rabbi Granet asked how he may be able to do something to assist his talmidim.

R’ Kanievsky stated “you are in the category of one who the tzibur requires and as such, you should sit shiva for three days and then return to yeshiva. Nevertheless, you may only sit on a low chair as halacha demands”.

  1. I heard that Rav Granet decided to buy the Brooklyn Bridge and use the toll money he can collect to pay for somebody else to sit shiva for him. Bottom line; if you hear a story that doesn’t seem likely, don’t believe it. Even if the source prints a qualification statement.

  2. Why do you post such stories that you don’t verify only to post another story days later retracting???? Wait till you verify what the Gedolim say before posting anything. People who tell stories like to see it in print, so if we stop posting everything we hear, maybe people would stop making up stories.

Personally I would like to know if this is really true.

  3. #2- No, he meant yeshiva KETANA not yeshiva gedola. In E”Y, yeshiva ketana is high school (and only 3 years) and yeshiva gedola is beis medrash.

  4. Methinks that the honorable editors and wannabe journalists of this respected news website might do well to get themselves a degree in journalism. Real editors always require verification before allowing a reported story to print. And in the few instances when they found out that the purported story wasn’t true, the reporter was fired. You aren’t a journalist just because you know how to cut and paste news stories. Especially if the story will in some way malign an acknowledged godol.

  5. what i find sad is that we comment about articles reported on TYW . We then comment about other persons comments. often the simplest thing would be to be Yeshiva World people and look up a simple Halacha. See the Shach and Be`er Heitiv in YD 384 where there is an explicit halacha that a Melamed may teach during his Shiva

this is a quote from the aruch hashulchan
