US Ambassador to Israel James Cunningham must be spending too much time in his Herzliya Pituach mansion, or perhaps his armored embassy surroundings, but he released statements to the media that America and Israel see “eye to eye” regarding sanction against Iran.
While Israel does approve sanction, “crippling sanctions” as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu described them, there does seem to be a significant difference of opinion as to the urgency of implementing those sanctions.
Cunningham explained that it will take time to muster support for such sanctions, adding he is confident that there is sufficient time. Just this week US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters on a plane that she believes we are talking months until such a process can be implemented. Israel has been sounding the alarm, most recently last week when Defense Minister Ehud Barak met with senior administration officials on Capitol Hill, including Clinton, the vice president and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
He told reporters that some are concerned regarding the time factor, but America feels that there is still time to impose effective sanctions on Iran and reports signaling that the international community may have missed the window of opportunity are simply unfounded.
