It must be pointed out that the following story, which is making the rounds in the chareidi world in Eretz Yisrael may be more of a prime example of IDF bureaucratic incompetence than an ‘anti-chareidi’ story as some are portraying it.
The story address an avreich who lives in the center of the country, who a number of years ago was compelled to leave beis medresh after being diagnosed with a growth in the area of his brain stem. Since that time, the avreich has been undergoing treatments, which are ongoing till this day.
The fact that he no longer appears on the yeshiva roster, military induction officials came to the determination that he is not learning full time, and therefore, he must report for military service.
The family of the avreich of course sent the appropriate documentation to military officials, but it appears the red tape that plagues so many governmental agencies is alive and well in Eretz Yisrael too.
The avreich was given a number of dates, three to be exact, on which he was to appear for induction to begin his military service. The latest date was for today, February 3, 2010. The family felt they exhausted all regular channels, sending medical documentation over and over again, prompting them to turn to the defense minister’s office and others. The military was less than understanding, stating with absolute certainty if the avreich does not report on Feb. 3rd, military police will come to the home and escort him in handcuffs.
Baruch Hashem, with little time to spare, the induction order was cancelled, with the office of the IDF Spokesman releasing a statement apologizing for the bureaucratic mishandling of the case, stating the obvious, that someone in an administrative position seems to have failed to properly process the medical documentation which shows beyond the shadow of a doubt that the avreich is not avoiding the draft, but unfortunately fighting for his life.

Incompetent government bureaucrats – alive and well in Israel AND here in the U.S.!
Yea but at least here, in the US, you have a congressman to go to.
#2 – Obviously that were people to go to in Israel also, since he was NOT arrested.
Stupidity has no geographic borders.
B”H they made the correction before causing the family any further grief and aggravation.
Why the loshon hara? The IDF made a mistake, they admitted and corrected it. That is the essence of teshuva. Halvai others would do the same.

Why do we need to know about this? Do you report every case of bureaucractic incompetence?
Talk about slanted journalism! Was this supposed to be a newsworthy, informative article, or an editorial against the IDF.
In my days (I am now 50) when a bochur from Bnei Brak wanted to get out of the army, he would report to the induction with peanut butter in his underwear and backside and keep on sticking his finger in and licking it. He was thrown out of the induction immediately. I am not saying that this bochur is not justified, I am sure his story is legitimate, but I can understand where the IDF may have had previous experiences to the contrary.
