On Wednesday, 27th January, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon visited the grave of the Chasam Sofer, the world renowned rabbi who lived and is buried in Bratislava. Ayalon was in Bratislava to meet with senior Slovakian officials and present the Righteous Among the Nations awards to those non-Jews who rescued Jews during the Shoah.
Ayalon made a special request to visit the grave of the revered Chasam Sofer and to learn more about the history of the Jews of Bratislava, formerly known as Pressburg. During meetings with the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Secretary of Slovakia, Ayalon told his hosts about the life and work of the Chasam Sofer and that it was important to preserve the Jewish sites in their country.
“It is especially important for me to visit the grave of one of our greatest rabbis, the Chasam Sofer, and to call on the Slovakian government to do all they can to help preserve the Jewish historic and religious sites in their country,” Ayalon said at the Righteous Among the Nations awards ceremony, attended by the Prime Minister and senior Slovakian politicians.
