Following an undercover investigation lasting for about a year, two residents of Rishon L’Tzion were arrested, suspected of stealing 170 weapons intended for use for elite IDF units, weapons they allegedly sold for profit to criminal elements. The news of their arrests earlier in the week was cleared for publication on Wednesday. The thefts included automatic weapons and sniper rifles. Police are not ruling out that possibility that some of the weapons have fallen into the hands of terrorists.
Authorities admit the investigation was launched after a weapons cache was discovered in Taibeh, leading to undercover agents to Israel weapons manufacturing industries, where the weapons were taken. Other military equipment was also taken, including silencers, range finders and an unspecified quantity of ammunition.
The Kfar Saba Magistrate’s Court extended the remand of the suspects for seven days.
