Bird flu was diagnosed in the poultry coop of Kibbutz Ein Schemer near Hadera on Tuesday, leading veterinary officials to the decision that 43,000 birds will have to be destroyed today, Wednesday.
Chief veterinarian in the Hadera area Dr. Moshe Heimowitz explained the need to destroy the chickens, placing the entire coop in quarantine after the diagnosis was confirmed.
Health officials report the bird flu does not pass from poultry to humans, but nevertheless, those persons who were in contact with the infected birds will receive prophylactic Tamiflu.
