It appears the elections for a new chief rabbi in Ashdod may not be taking place without a stir, just days after the chareidi media reported Ashdod appears different from other major chareidi populations, permitting the election without dispute.
A letter reportedly signed by prominent rabbonim of the Abuchatzera family has been sent to Chacham Ovadia Yosef Shlita, expressing their objections to the election of Rabbi Chaim Pinto, who appears headed for position.
Longtime Shas askan R’ Yehuda Avidan told Kol Chareidi that as a nephew and grandchild of the Abuchatzera Rabbonim Shlita, he can state with confidence that many, or event most of the signatures on the letter are forged, and when the responsible parties are located, “they will have a cheshbon with the Rabbanei Abuchatzera for years to come”.
Avidan adds with absolute certainty that Rabbis Refael and David Abuchatzera Shlita support Pinto’s candidacy and of this there is no doubt. He acknowledged there may be one legitimate signature on the letter, signed “under duress” due to mounting pressure.
Avitan expressed confidence that the matter will pass and Rav Ovadia will be fully briefed as to the true realities surrounding the forged letter, adding “If Hashem has decided I must endure two hours of yissurim and that is my kapora, so be it”.
He added that G-d willing, the election will be held on 23 Adar and those opposed should prepare for this eventuality, for he is not afraid and the community and rabbonim stand behind Rav Pinto, who will receive the post in honest democratic elections.
