Addressing a session of the Knesset Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee on Tuesday, IDF Chief of Intelligence Major-General Amos Yadlin stated Hizbullah is continuing efforts to hit a senior Israeli official, still planning an attack to avenge the assassination of its senior commander, Imam Mughniyeh. The terror organization’s number two commander was blown up in his vehicle in Syria about two years ago, an incident Iran blames on Israel. Yadlin explains Hizbullah tried to avenge the attack twice, in Egypt and Azerbaijan. Yadlin believes such an attack will take place far from Israel’s northern border for Hizbullah does not wish to heat up the border area just now.
In line with his assessment, the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) has boosted security for senior officials traveling abroad.
“Despite the fact Hizbullah appears tame at present, due to Israel’s deterrence abilities, as well as a result of political realities in Lebanon, Israel and the Jewish People remain preferred targets” he concluded.
