The daily Yisrael HaYom has revealed that Magen David Adom Director-General Eli Bin does indeed enjoy spending the organization’s funds, not always wisely according to many. The reports citing Bin’s malfeasance accuse him of wasting NIS millions, including the purchase of an expensive 4-wheel drive vehicle and granting costly favors for those in his inner circle.
Recently, “dozens of physicians, paramedics and other personnel” turned to Yisrael HaYom with additional information, angered over the blatant waste, all the decision of one man. They amassed a file containing documents, photos and minutes from meetings, which they hesitated to reveal to the media until Yisrael HaYom took the first step with its damaging report, giving them the courage to now step forward.
The group agreed to come forward on the condition of anonymity, but members are presenting documents which spell out fiscal wrongdoing and actual law-breaking activities. They report of Bin’s “bully tactics” and explain how he hounds those employees, dedicated veterans, who do not agree with his policies.
Yisrael HaYom quoted “veteran physicians” anonymously, “who described a reign of terror” under Bin, Yisrael HaYom reports, providing a list of physicians who were once affiliated with MDA “but opted to run”. One such physician is Prof. Shmuel Shapira, of Hadassah Medical Organization, who as a member of the MDA board tried for a number of years to implement a semblance of order in the organization. He came to the realization that Bin and Noam Yifrach, a senior union official were undermining those efforts, Prof. Shapira opted to leave as well. Other physicians and personnel gave statements that the running of MDA may be compared to a “third world nation”.
Some point out that Bin is known to maintain good ties in the Ministry of Health and in Israel Police, and he basically rules by intimidation. One employee is quoted as blaming the Health Ministry, “which prefers to turn a blind eye”.
A list of questions addressing a reign of terror, lack of proper management, a buddy system, and intimidation allegations was submitted to MDA, most resulting in outright denials. Yisrael HaYom promises to continue digging, seeking to uncover the other side of MDA.
