Bar Ilan U. to Launch a Medical School in Tzfas

The Council of Higher Education in Israel has decided Israel’s fifth medical school will be in Tzfas, and Bar Ilan University will be responsible for its fiscal and educational development.

Education Minister Gideon Saar, who heads the council, stated the move is a most significant one, for Tzfat in particular, but for the entire Galil region, a development that goes hand-in-hand with ongoing government efforts to bring more Jews to the region.

The Galil faces demographic dangers due to the large Arab population and it has become a national priority project, along with the Negev in the south. Minister of Galil & Negev Development Silvan Shalom praised the move, who added that he urged the council to reach a decision this month to enable the new school to get underway in October 2010, and it appears this will indeed become a reality.

  1. Why didn’t they let a university which already has a medical faculty set this up (ie, one with experience)?

Why davka choose a university that does *not* have a medical faculty?

Secondly: this is a completely crazy idea, due to the lack of a serious, big university hospital in Tzfas. All they have is the Rebecca Ziv hospital, which is a small regional hospital with no specialized services: no burn unit, no pediatric specialisms, no cardiac or neuro-surgery, no real research facilities or experience…

I have never, ever heard, anywhere in the world, of a medical faculty which is not accompanied by a university hospital (generally meaning a large, major, tertiary care center with at least the facilities listed above). Such a medical faculty simply cannot provide the same level of (clinical) education that is to be expected. What are they going to do – send all students to Rambam hospital in Haifa for these things? They already have the Technion there!

I, for one, would not want to learn at that university.
