Off-Duty NYS Trooper Dies In Accidental Fall


Walden, NY – An off-duty New York State trooper was killed Monday afternoon when he fell 15 feet from a roof, State Police and Walden Village Police said Tuesday.

Richard O’Brien, 42, of West Nyack, was repairing the siding at a residence at 29 Pleasant Avenue in Walden when he fell from an extension ladder, sustaining head and internal injuries.

O’Brien was transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh where he later died.

O’Brien was a 12 year veteran of the State Police and was assigned as an investigator attached to the Drug Enforcement Task Force in New York City.

He had also recently returned from two tours of duty, serving in the Army in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
