Some are calling it ‘silence of the lambs’ but as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu forges ahead with a 10-month construction freeze, his cabinet appears to be remaining conspicuously silent. Seeming to portray the freeze as a right-wing victory, aides to the prime minister explain such a move would not include Yerushalayim, “only” Yehuda and Shomron, as if the housing shortage in those areas is less significance than in the capital.
The prime minister’s staff is releasing statements to the media that the step is to place the burden of returning to the negotiating table on the PA (Palestinian Authority), seemingly a beneficial move for Israel, but in fact, it represents another capitulation to American interference in Israeli domestic affairs.
Opposition MK (Ichud HaLeumi) Yaakov Katz is calling on cabinet ministers to awaken, to respond, and to make their voices heard before it is too late. Katz focused his words on Likud ministers, members of the prime minister’s right-wing party, questioning their silence as a possible halt to construction becomes a policy reality.
