Tel Hashomer Hospital has announced a new program intended at attracting young doctors back home, permitting Israelis who attend medical school abroad to do their residency in Israel.
According to a report in the daily Maariv, those studying medicine in Europe may be able to complete their studies in the Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer. This is the result of an agreement signed with the University of Hungary, an institution attended by an estimated 600 Israelis. The students wishing to may begin their sixth year of studies at home. 65 students have already signed on for the new program.
Sheba Director Prof. Ze’ev Rothstein explains that most of the young physicians receive a license to practice in Europe, and as such, they remain abroad. He hopes the new program will bring the doctors back home, where they are sorely needed.
