Yitzchak Levanon was appointed as Israel’s next ambassador to Egypt, replacing Shalom Cohen. Cohen has been waiting for a replacement for over a year, but no one has really been lining up for the appointment.
Levanon, 65, is a 38-year veteran of the Foreign Ministry, currently the ministry’s Arabic spokesman. He has served as ambassador to the UN in Geneva as well as consul general in Boston and Canada. The cabinet is expected to approve the appointment at Sunday’s weekly meeting.
