Officials at Shaare Zedek Medical Center explain the death of a 25-year-old male following a routine tonsillectomy was the result of “rare complications”. The resident of the Old City died of hemorrhaging the day following his release.
According to family members, the patient began vomiting blood at home, prompting them to summon an ambulance. He was transported to hospital on Wednesday morning. He arrived at Bikur Cholim Hospital with a weak pulse. His condition deteriorated rapidly until slipping into a coma followed by cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead near the hospital entrance.
Shaare Zedek officials report a senior surgeon performed the operation and the patient remained under observation for 48 hours. He was in good health when he was released. Hospital officials added that while tragic, the chain of events was not expected or predictable, but a report was filed by hospital officials to review the case to rule out malpractice. A report was also filed with the Health Ministry.

A few years ago I saw an ENT (ear nose & throat specialist) who recommended a tonsillectomy for me. When I asked him about the risks involved he mentioned death by hemorrhaging. When I reacted with shock he explained to me exactly what happened in the above story. It scared me enough to push off having it done & to reconsider. These days surgeons are so nonchalant about doing surgery (it’s just another days work for them.) However, no matter how commonplace a procedure it actually is, be carefull not to go under the surgeons scalpal without a second opinion. At least then you’ve made your proper Hishtadlus.
